I had the pleasure of attending the International peace event at the United Nations with IRK Magazine X Cannon Media Group. I got to experience an abundance of experiences from different parts of the arts such as graphic design, fashion, education and non-profit organizations that will or already implementing sustainability internationally.
We were informed how students, communities and designers use their knowledge and morals to express their art in ways that are interactive, fashion forward and engaging. Through presentations students designed games that advocated for sustainability. As well as featuring, There is No Limit, Co-Founder and very skilled textile designer, Mariama Camara. Her design had become cross-continental, creating her textiles from vegetable scraps and raw materials to create dyes. In this previous collection, The Peace Collection, she brought her signature style of inorganic prints and free flowing silhouettes while collaborating with a Mexican-Yucatecan brand, MAZAEHUAL. The process of the dye extractions were so meticulous, you would think the colors would not be as pigment as they were from description, yet it was my favorite detail.
Furthermore, I caught up with the designer from MAZAEHUAL. He had the pleasure of explaining the collection and collaboration that took about 13 days (which is insane) to complete. Wearing his own brand, IRK x CMG & I, all gathered around; gawking at the fact the collection took so fast and the fact his garments were so soft and light-weight.
The take-away from this event was how it can start with you but takes a village within your community to inspire in ways to bring change. As well as that it's possible to succeed your expectation's of success by getting recognition from a great organization like the United Nations.
Since it starts with you and I, down below check out a fairly sustainable outfit that I made in honor of International Peace.
